The Decoded Language
Keith Garrett Wright
Subcultures—for many—are where the themes of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are manifested. However, ideas curated in community may become distorted once a subculture grows—leaving the original purpose lost forever. But, how can a subculture maintain its essence while acquiring authority? In 2018, Hip-Hop officially surpassed Rock as the most popular genre in the US. But many, understand Hip-Hop as so much more, and unlike many black art forms of the past, it’s continued to grow in success and social impact. What started as a political movement, over the years, has managed to retain its political stance and with this newfound acknowledgement, Hip-Hop still manages to teach, inspire, and embolden black communities. Giving a voice to the voiceless.
