Digital Folklore
Nigel Sequeira
Much of contemporary digital communication relies at least in part on visual cues to create context for the conversation. An emoji offers a succinct mark of emotion or response either on it’s own or in conjunction with text. Memes, as we have found through research, offer a way of appropriating the characteristics of an image to create one’s own expression of being. While we are able to carry banter through iconography, is it possible to have a complex conversation in the same way??

Through analyzing discourse over multiple modalities, we have the opportunity to find similarities and differences in conversational styles.

Oral, written, and visual conversations were held under constant conditions to keep only the methodologies through which the conversations were had a variable. Four groups conducted the three exercises.
