Deconstruction is a way of thinking that is being used in our daily life. It is about how we understand a concept, or in another way, how we assign meaning to an object. Consider throwing a stone into the water; how could you know where that stone sank? You don’t know exactly where it sank, but you can still tell with all the waves surrounding that stone. We will never know the exact definition of an object, but we can use many other things to describe it. Understanding what deconstruction is will be the same.
The recreation of the NYC images
In order to get the initial understanding of my thesis topic, three experimental gifs were made. Executing the idea of deconstruction brought interesting results.
Deconstruction of the discipline part 1
Including three linking parts, I used deconstruction as a methodology to explore Michel Foucault’s idea of discipline. Referring to the book Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison, I created a deck of tarot cards to decompose the the key characteristics of the discipline mentioned in that book.
Deconstruction of the discipline part 2
Stories that were constructed in the first one were further deconstructed here. I kept opening the form of it. Using installations, those stories were told in a different way.
Deconstruction of the discipline part 3
Three sets of stamps were created in this part to wrap up the ideas explored in the first two projects. It was considered as an essential tool of a fictional religion worshipping the discipline. Combining composability and modularity, the believers can use it to tell their own stories.
Capstone---NYT text generator
Our world has already been overly deconstructed. However, this kind of deconstruction is incomplete. In the Capstone, I designed tools with p5.js to deconstruct information around us. They are separated into mainly two parts--text generators and further deconstruction tools.
Capstone---Trump’s tweets version
Donald Trump’s tweets are chaotic and people were being sensitive to them for quite a long period. Therefore, Donald Trump’s tweets are good resources for this project. Using that resources, this version of text generator shows a way for users about how to construct those messy messages.
Capstone---Further deconstruction
Further deconstruction tools, using Trump's tweets as an example. The first one will analyze the text and according to the word’s frequency to display different sized text. The others are meant to alternate, distort and transform the original text to further deconstruct it.
