Design Versus the Human Animal
Johanna Beck
Humans live in physical bodies, in physical environments. At the same time, much of the human experience is mediated through ideas that don’t exist in physical form, and in virtual spaces via technology. A person could also live their whole life on a computer, stopping only to eat, sleep and use the bathroom, completely unaware of the physical world around them. Many of us spend hours each day in this scenario, building non-physical worlds, immersed in non-material ideas. What does it mean to be disembodied in this way? How does the world come between us and our bodies?
