Aesthetic Hegemony and Body Positivity
Xuan Zhang
Cultural hegemony has been used as the ruling class controlling the multicultural society's culture, beliefs, values, and the recognition of beauty. The social standards forcefully guide and inculcate people’s sense of beauty, and create what I call a kind of aesthetic restraint. Social media allows the amplification of mainstream sources of information, which could make social media can also be used as a weapon to break traditional aesthetic restraints and create a more diverse and inclusive environment. This research is trying to redefine aesthetic hegemony by analyzing the aesthetic image of the social media with the goal of increasing people’s awareness about social attitudes as it relates to our physical appearance and perceptions of self.
