Food Appropriation
Yuejia Zhu
Food as one of the most important elements of daily ritual not only satisfies people’s appetite, but also represents different cultural and ethical backgrounds. Historically, food represents specific cultures and identities. However, as cultures and indentation merge in intercultural, global societies, food now represents multiple cultures and identities. This has led to stereotypes or appropriation.

“Study of “fusion”
When we are debating food appropriation, do we realize that the ingredients are also counted as “imported” or “Fusion”? Chilli pepper is not originally from China, for example, but has been greatly used in Chinese food, especially in Szechuan cuisine.

Study of “Color V.S. Stereotypical Concept”

Color is the most obvious element when people see an object. I started by collecting images from Chinese restaurants all over the US in order to explore stereotypes of food and culture.

Future Fashion Sales: Digital Meeting
Use of the Zoom software jumped 30-fold in April, as the coronavirus pandemic forced millions to work, learn and socialize remotely. No doubt designing digital clothing for video conferencing will become a trend in the future. Software like zoom already has a virtual background board function, and future fashion will devote itself to designing virtual clothing for video conferencing.

See Things in GENERAL
When the stereotypical image turns into simple color blocks, it prevents viewers from putting false labels on them.

Recipe Sheet which help people break the stereotypical thoughts
A new way of cooking was created. Instead of using clear instructions, this sheet helps people personalize the fusion based on their own eating habit and preference. It helps users to try and experience food in different cultures, but also follow their personal eating preference.
Personalized Platform
I created a platform to give people an opportunity to try and mix the food based on their own culture and identity. This way, culture can emerge through food in a more authentic way.
