Feminism in China_Opportunities and Challenges after 1840
Zhuoying Lu
My thesis focuses on the history of feminism in China. What factors have influenced Chinese society?” Response to feminism, what are the differences between Western and Chinese feminism? Chinese women “woke up” and began to fight for their rights after 1840 when China began to suffer from colonialism. Due to the collision of traditional and new ideas, the feudal society and the corruption of the government, the initial struggle of Chinese women was not systematic. Until the mid-19th century, feminism from Western countries affected women all over the world. In the United States, there was the USA Feminist Movement, which injected new blood into the Chinese society. Today, Chinese women have more opportunities to be exposed to global ideas, and facing challenges from it at the same time.
Visual Artifact: "Perspective"
The fact that you see from a certain angle limits your
ability to understand the entire truth.
Photography
In this photograph, I used beads, water, fabric and mirrors as the media. With different degrees of gray, beads scattered, which represent male and female are mixed together in every period of time.
In the mirror series, the beads are surrounded by their reflection to show the struggle and darkness; in the water series, the beads have more dynamic and flexibility, which shows the freedom of females; in the fabric series, being closer with each other, the beads mean cooperation between two genders.
Poster series 1
From the previous photos, I developed osters. These three posters respectively represent the three stages of Feminism's development in China -- 1843, 1923 and 2015. The background color of the poster changes from dark to light, indicating that women's life has developed from dark to bright.
Infographic
SDG is a collection of 17 global Sustainable Development Goals. For the SDG2025 Exhibition, I designed a series of infographics and galleries for the Gender Parity goal of SDG2025 exhibition. The two infographics below respectively show the development of gender equality in health, political and economic education.
The SDG2025 exhibition design project is divided into internal and external parts. As shown in the picture on the left, the interior is designed based on Logo, which not only highlights the theme, but also gives the gallery more space to display information. On the right, a large installation art model stands outside the gallery for visitors to interact with. It shows the characteristics, and increases tourists participation.
Poster series 2
Different from Poster-1, this series of posters is aimed at teenagers, so the overall style is cheerful and simple. They teach teenagers that genders are not competitive but cooperative; women should always think about how to improve themselves instead of against men.
Mini-site
This mini website describes the entire thesis project in detail. Landing Page inherited from the cover of pamphlet, shows the journey of self-discovery of Chinese women. The overall style of the mini-site continues the contrast of blue and red, light yellow background and rounded typeface. Readers can appreciate the website and interact with it to have a deeper understanding of Feminism in China.
Anxiety
This is a video about female anxiety made with coding. When I go out with my friends wearing “unusual” outfits in the general public, I'm likely to be asked, "Why are you wearing that?" I used the elements of clothing -- lines and deep red to express women's depression and anxiety.
