Meme IRL: Offline and Online Memes in the Internet Age
Chuyi Wang
When a meme is mentioned today, we generally refer to an Internet meme. An Internet meme is usually an image or a video spread like a virus, carrying ideas, symbols, or practices, as a form of cultural transmission. A concept that was put forward as early as 1976 , there were already then a large number of offline “memes”. Today, offline memes and their creative potential as an effective medium of communications is often overlooked. By applying the methodologies of field research, data collection and case studies, this research investigates dissemination patterns and compares the power of online and offline memes.
