A Guide to appropriation, cultural exchange and homage
James Tupling
Cultural vessels are manifested in many aspects of society: from the embodiment of lived experiences of people to designed objects or artifacts. However, in our hyper-globalized world, cross-cultural identities and interactions have created an expanded but nuanced spectrum of cultural formation. This cultural vibrancy presents challenges: it can be difficult to generate content without being insensitive or culturally tone-deaf for design. Such uncertainty around authenticity and representation has fueled a social call for clarity, resulting in a climate of political and cultural correctness. This investigation explores the interplay of cultural vessels through a critique of political correctness and cultural appropriation.

Capstone
In exploring the concept of appropriation I pursued a line of enquiry surrounding the idea of cultural authority. These posters contain quotes that challenge cultural authority from thinkers, writers and artists that have worked to transgress against a singular cultural authority.

Cultural Appropriation
To encapsulate elements of my investigation in cultural appropriation I designed this publication. The publication features a stripped down aesthetic that serves as a clear container for the content which is designed to be clear and educational.

Cultural Vessels
These three posters were visual explorations utilizing appropriation as a methodology. I photographed and scanned NYC subway metro cards which I then warped, cut and manipulated. By appropriating them I was able to push them past their original context and create something new entirely.
