According to Pew Research, The United States is home to more than 40 million immigrants, one-fifth of the world’s total. Amongst them, Latin American immigrants face language and cultural barriers that make it challenging to adapt to America and often face humiliation when they do not assimilate. The integration of Latin American immigrants into American culture and language can be a resource to the country and rewards immigrants with personal freedom as they move from space to space. Exploring emotional suppression within the Latin American immigrant community through curation of narratives. This thesis explores, within the larger framework of globalization, movement and gestures through technology and material exploration, the ways in which knowledge beyond language is transmitted between Latin American immigrants, their families and other Americans.
This verb can describe cutting or splitting something apart with a sharp instrument, or it can describe sticking to something like glue. I used materials like clay and candle wax, pulling them together, then tearing them apart, a metaphor for family dynamic after mygrating to a new space.

I began my work within the community by teaching English to Latin American immigrant mothers at LaGuardia Community College Center for Immigrant Education and Training (CIET). I grew up teaching my mother English at a young age so this felt like a full-circle moment to my contribution. I wanted to understand what could help these mothers learn English and feel more comfortable in their own space.

Based on a biblical story of Ruth and Naomi, a mother and daughter who leave home because of a famine, La Rueda contains family legacy and language through voice spectrums. The graphic novel was used as a cultural probe and ends on a cliff hanger for participants to engage with and finish the story.
