Unearthing historical artifacts
Shuaiting(Steve) Dong
This research builds on a theoretical study of implicit hidden content, such as new perspectives as the times evolve, conclusion of the scientific and technological intervention and their creation, and explores a return to direct observation of the historical artifacts themselves. The initial phase proposes to reveal the often-overlooked details of the legacy objects, such as composition, color, image, metaphor, material, etc. A second goal is to contextualize findings within a socially diverse framework, and reveal new discoveries and new controversies, rather than just exploring in the comfort zone — the superficial areas that are often known to the public.

Historical Framework
The historical and contextual framework based on the methodology of unearthing historical artifacts, from very traditional and basic solutions to technology- X-ray.

The process of unearthing historical artifacts
1. Select the target 2. Make the intuitive observation - shape, outline, color, size, material, etc. 3. Do the first search, and summary 4. Classify the observations 5. Select the direction of interest 6. Search for the direction 7.Summarize the new knowledge obtained
X-RAY analysis of historical artifacts
I tried to re-present the X-ray visually through summarizing it as: Reflection, Light, Spectrum, Two or Three Dimensions, Data, Undercovering, and Revealing. Methodology: Using the reflection of the laser in the mirror, as the process of the X-ray in scanning and analyzing historical paintings.

Chinese as a pictograph has progressed and simplified over the thousands of years of development of Chinese culture. Such changes have made some of the words in traditional poems no longer match contemporary meanings or even are not well known. Therefore, the ancient poems are layered in three dimensions according to, pronunciation, and meaning.

Overview of Capstone Book
Capstone book is the collection of one category of unearthing historical artifacts- Pattern.

Overview of the pattern which was collected in the book.
The pattern of each section in the book, and design with patterns.
Circle of Pattern
My personal understanding of patterns. Circle as the main shape and combined with the paisley pattern which is similar as Yin and Yang pattern to express that pattern is alive and well. As Chinese philosopher Lao Zi said: The Tao produced one, one produced two, two produced threem three produced all things. This is what pattern does. It developed and inspired, then be created. And this is also what designers and artists do.

Unearthing Guernica, masterpiece of Pablo Picasso, and then represent it based on research.

THESIS BOOK
In order to show the complete Capstone design in the thesis book and make the research part meet people's reading habits, the pattern book is directly embedded in the thesis book. This "burger" form makes the boring book more vivid in appearance and reading style.
