Theatre, as an iconic field of performance art, contains the mysteries of how to capture audiences' attention and engage them in the content. The cross-sensory communication and audience theory inspire me to discuss further how designers can borrow from theatre techniques to create a more interactive and engaging experience for their audiences. This furthers my interest in the possibilities of communication design. Can design pieces be like theatres, continuous, possibly open-ended, and combine all sensory stimuli?
Theatre is a medium that combines virtuality with reality. Once we’re captured by the element consciously created, we gradually fall into virtual reality.
Time and Space: Lights
The project is a series of experiments of using unexpected ways to demonstrate the distance through time unconsciously. In this experiment, I measure the dynamic distance by capturing the flashlights swinging in the winds with different camera exposure times.
Time and Space: Movement
In this experiment, I hide the designed installation beside the walkway. Every time a pedestrian passes, they will leave a pattern on the paper. Each pattern differs by the directions, the speed, and the steps they walk.
Cultural Probe: Mission Vision
This cultural probe aims to have the participants recognize the space and objects surrounding them. The kit includes an introduction card, questionnaire sheet, red paper for measuring and annotating, and beads for mapping out the spatial experience.
Cultural Probe: Mapping
This is the outcome gathered from the participants. The mappings show how differently each of them demonstrated the spatial experience. Some are very abstract, while others map out the actual scene they saw.
Playground
This project aims to create an exceptional experience for the participants by mapping out indirect wayfinding systems. Instructions such as “turn around,” “sit down,” “stop,” or other irregular guides to create interaction between the participants and the space they are familiar with.
Playground: Interaction
Playground successfully invited participants to do things and be aware of their surroundings. The video is a time-lapse recording of participants' reactions.
Routing
Routing is a project aiming to re-experience time and space through physical experience. The experience turned into musical notes, creating an amusing and distinct melody.
Empathy Machine: Immersive Storytelling
The capstone project emphasizes the importance of storytelling. Through animated typography, audio recording, and interactive sections, the audiences are more likely to engage with the contents and empathize with the story.
Empathy Machine: Participant’s result
This project collects data from over fifty participants from over ten countries. The result shows that through my curated storytelling, audiences from cross-cultural and cross generations can appreciate the value of the story well and be empathetic on the feelings.
