The Value of Dreams: Articulating the influence of dreaming on the potential for contemporary aesthetics

Dreams are a fascinating form of human expression: a portal to unlocking our subconscious, they have particularly influenced psychoanalysis and surrealism of the twentieth century and provide a rich area for communications design to explore and apply today. In order to better explore the influence of dream aesthetics on communications design, my thesis will make full use of the art and design forms based on dreams and combine the evolution of dream use with human dream application. My interest in dream aesthetics has prompted me to study this unique phenomenon.
I will refer to design, fine art, literature, and plays as examples, to explore the evolution
of the aesthetic applications of dreams in art and design. How are different aspects of dream aesthetics being communicated? How do dreams end up expressing themselves in communication design and other visualizations?

Dream Collector: Methodology
“Dream Containers” is one of my dream aesthetic experiments. It’s a serious of ceramics I created about dreams. During the process, I visualized the colors of my dreams into the ceramics. I tried to squeeze out the shape of a dream. Making the Dream Containers really seems to be carrying dreams.Dream Collector
The direct conceptual source of my dream series creation is the experience of my own dreams. What I have gained from creating the dream series is that I have gradually developed my own style through the inspriation of dreams. The exploration of dreams has strengthened my confidence in my future creation.
Dream Communication Installation
In order to create the feeling of a dream, I chose to use a translucent curtain as the medium, using PVC cube as structure. And dropped the finished Dream Container videos on it. I placed the real ceramics next to the installation.Dream Communication Installation: Preparation
During the process, participants will enter an immersive dream experience where they will write their dreams on a card and hang it on a dream container. In this process, the participants have the opportunity to feel my dreams and to think about their own dreams.

All the different strategies I have applied to this project have made to rethinking how dream affect people’s attitude towards art and design, now I can say dream can expand the possibilities. No matter it’s a pattern in a zine, or ceramics, or digital installations, dream is a good source to create.
