A future of collaboration: Designer and Artificial intelligence

Design is a discipline that combines reason and sensibility. AI can replace a lot of repetitive work and open up a larger creative space. As designers, facing the fact that many creative and design production processes can now be replaced by AI, how might we redefine our identities, role, and value, alongside these technological developments?

Since 2018, I started to record new, scary, quirky dreams in the form of texts. Tracing back, the elements in dreams come from reality, but dreams break the logic of everthing; The dream world is free, unnatural, and uncontrolled. I cannot predict when dreams will come, nor can I control the direction of dreams. The unknown features of dreams always surprise me and fascinate me.

The way how AI works is similar to the mechanics of the dream world; AI takes material from existing works, breaks the logic of the visual elements, and organizes images in a new way. Like the dream world, those images are blurred, strange, and unnatural, and AI is free, and I cannot control it the way I can control any traditional design or painting tool. This is an uncharted path, an experiment in co-creation.

In 2022, AI art becomes one of the hot topics as AI-based text-to-image generators become available to the public, with a Google search for the keyword “AI-ART” showing over two billion results. However, as a student of art, I’ve noticed that many people lack a basic understanding of what artificial intelligence is, how it functions, and how far it has progressed.

Yes, you can input prompts and get image results in a second thanks to AI. But AI is not a MAGIC BOX, for now, all AI artwork begins with a vision built in the human mind. Those sophisticated, orderly, and flawless AI works have been created by a “human” who is constantly changing prompts, selecting images, modifying image details, etc. Somehow, human’s presence is be ignored. They ignore the fact that working with AI still requires valuable time and thought; they simply label AI work as “fast and cheap. ” In this book, I show my design process, you can find out how many fail images I had in the “ Total images” information in my book. To harvest an image that suits my needs require me to give multiple tries.

By organizing the dreams, I discovers the interesting fact that most of dreams I records occurred at 4:00 to 6:00 am. This book contains thirteen of my early dreams, and I currently have about thirty dreams in record. Because of the limitation of space, I have only selects part of them to present. I hope I still have the chance to keep this series of creations going.

Although I have no intention of analyzing or interpreting dreams, I cannot ignore the symbolic meaning woven by various elements. Dreams are the condensation of consciousness, the shadow of fantasy, the box of desire. Artificial intelligence gives me an opportunity to express the scenes in the dream world through a more realistic approach. Although I can’t capture every detail of the dream world, I hope this will help you see my dream world from another perspective.
