The thesis examines the phenomenon of nature-deficit disorder and humanity’s intricate, evolving relationship with the
natural world. It traces how humans have shifted from a harmonious coexistence with nature to an anthropocentric,
utilitarian viewpoint. This mindset change has led to people’s growing disconnection from the environment, potentially
impacting ecological sustainability and human well-being. To address this issue, the thesis explores how communications
design can serve as a transformative force, guiding the public to rediscover their connection with nature and mitigate
the challenges posed by nature-deficit disorder.

Eco-Ticket to Nature
The Eco-Ticket to Nature reimagines Governors Island ferry tickets as sustainable tools for fostering environmental
engagement. These tickets, crafted from eco-friendly materials embedded with seeds, double as planting guides and maps
to the island’s Urban Farm. The project facilitates a direct, hands-on connection between people and nature by
encouraging visitors to plant their tickets and learn about urban agriculture practices.
Biomaterial Curtain
Crafted from dried fruit and vegetable peels mixed with eco-resin, this curtain blocks excessive sunlight while casting
mesmerising patterns inspired by traditional Chinese motifs. Each interaction with sunlight and wind fosters a daily
conversation with nature, advocating for environmental conservation and prompting a reevaluation of our relationship
with the natural world.
Whispers with the Sunlight
Each fabric imprint uses cyanotype to dialogue with nature, embodying life, reflection, and art. This project
intertwines my daily interactions with nature, life in the city, and inner expressions into tangible, evocative
expressions of existence.
