Unearthed Narratives: The Stifled Role of Rocks in Human-Nature Dynamics & the Metaphor buried Behind
Jiayi Chen (Jimmie)
This paper investigates the underestimated role rocks play in shaping the dynamics of the human natural environments,
challenging the prevailing anthropocentric view of stone as a mere resource. The study underscores the ongoing
environmental repercussions of global stone mining, manifesting as irreversible soil erosion, habitat loss and
disruptions to the hydrological cycle. By drawing a metaphorical link between the human-stone relationship and societal
structures, the study provides a distinctive perspective on humanity's role in the broader context of Earth's dynamics,
urging contemplation on responsible environmental stewardship in the face of persistent resource exploitation.
In the project Pseudo Value, stones in human society are categorized into six value types: history, aesthetics, rarity,
culture, science, and therapy. Stones are packaged as commodities based on these categories, reflecting the arbitrary
nature of human valuation. This highlights how societal perceptions shape the value of stones, leading to their
objectification. The naming of stones as commodities is a human construct, detached from the stones' intrinsic worth.
This prompts reflection on the essence of value attribution."
Souls in another dimension
In 'A Conversation,' the video project explores the widening gap between humans and other species, leading to the
exploitation of natural resources. Stones are personified, questioning their purpose and existence amidst human
commodification. Through simple yet profound dialogues, the project prompts reflection on the intrinsic value of stones
and humanity's relationship with nature.
