The Narcissistic Mirage: The Influence of AI Algorithms on Identity Formation
Goeun Kim (Skylar)
In the era of AI-based algorithms, social media personalization technology developed satisfies individual preferences
and subjectivity. However, it can create echo chambers that amplify the views and beliefs of particular groups.
Moreover, it feeds into the development of multiple online personas that align with one’s preferences, reinforcing a
narcissistic projection of the self, fostering a distorted sense of self-importance, a limited world perspective, and
inhibiting genuine introspection.
In the end, reliance on AI personalization will bring on a dystopian society hypnotized by collective narcissism where
uniformity reigns, and diversity is suppressed. Society comes under the influence of large technology companies, nuanced
meanings are reproduced, and we fall into a passive cycle of existence.
What would our future look like if personalization due to AI becomes severe and people become more dependent on AI? I
built a world called The Wavy Utopia, a dystopian society hooked on collective narcissism, where everything looks the
same, and diversity takes a back seat.
Just like the society we live in right now, advertisements are everywhere in this story. People are getting super hooked
on tech and AI, almost like it’s a pseudo-religion. They’re readily believing in random information on social media
without checking.
Prayer for The Wave
This prayer is about believing in the “Wave,” which means AI algorithm, and I turned it into an ad. The goal is to sort
of brainwash people, convincing them that this wavy utopia is way better than their current reality.
Picture people crawling instead of walking as if they’ve forgotten how to stand. It symbolizes our disconnect from human
rights and diversity, akin to infants with undeveloped minds. They follow predetermined paths without making choices or
considering alternatives.
The protagonist gazes at her reflection in the water, echoing Narcissus. Stripped of vibrant, individualistic makeup,
her hair shifts from expressive white to absorbing black, rendering all colors uniform.
This whole idea of everyone being the same, losing diversity and freedom. People have lost their individuality, and all
look the same, melting like candles. As they melt and flow, they become one single mass.
In the omnipotent grasp of Wave, AI, every event unfolds. They observe, manage, and distort every circumstance.
Consequently, significant issues arise. Hatred emerges unexpectedly, human bonds fray, and social tensions ignite with
alarming frequency. The richness of diverse perspectives, essential for fostering creativity, is dwindling.

"The selfie phenomenon of modern society has people collectively hypnotized, just as Narcissus is hypnotized by his
reflection in the water, we are hypnotized by our image in the screen.”–– Goeun Kim

In this poster-book are autostereograms made using selfies. Autostereograms are a fascinating form that merges
technology with creativity to create stunning illusions of three-dimensional scenes from two-dimensional images. Let
your eyes wander, and soon, you’ll find yourself unlocking the hidden letters within each image, revealing a secret
poetry.

People grapple with a pressing dilemma: discerning their true identity from AI-generated images derived from a few
selfies. While they bear a resemblance, they introduce a layer of uncertainty, prompting the fundamental question: Is
this portrayal genuinely reflective of me? A dystopian future looms, where AI tightly regulates aesthetic
representation.
