Inbetween
Yingxin Liu
Liminal space always fascinates me, and its uncertain transition awakens my consciousness of the space I inhabit. The transition from invisible to visible provides me with psychological buffering, enabling me to reexamine and reconstruct what I know and evaluate. In between the strictly defined points, this uncertainty allows for reevaluation, while certainty prepares me psychologically for the unknown. It alleviates the fear of facing the completely unknown. To me, the in-between is a dynamic state, not just a simple position, but a complex state middle is a dynamic state, located somewhere between two known points. It is not just a simple location, but a complex state composed of behaviors such as crossing, balancing, harmonizing, buffering, bridging, and integrating. In my work, the in-between is considered a primarily psychological public space, defined as midway rather than two specific points with distinct attributes. It exists between two defined points, reconstructing the political and social structures of this public space, making people’s perception of the space more open and fair while preserving a certain familiarity to protect the most fundamental human perception. I believe creating the in-between and making people aware of its existence are important means to address many existing problems. By creating the in-between, we create space for the possibility of many things happening. We don’t have to go from one point to another; our stories and our communication can take place midway, in a place that belongs not just to you or me but to us. Here, ideas can be materialized, power can be redistributed, and the ability to write and define identities can be more autonomous. Personal stories are encouraged to be showcased and shared. I consider the in-between as a methodology to design spaces and scenarios to solve problems.

An inch of gutter wanders between different pages, and the speed of movement varies between pages and sheets, creating different rhythms and cadences. Between the ups and downs, left and right, and one inch of blank space, these 10 stories unfold at different points.

Sound is not just a simple vibration of sound waves; it also symbolizes our relationship with the surrounding environment. Every sound is an expression within space, creating a scenario where background noise merges with human dialogue as if forming a harmonious chorus. When contexts blend into multi-person conversations, the faint murmurs of white noise blend with poetic dialogues, creating a unique atmosphere. Through the language of sound, we establish subtle and complex connections with the surrounding space and other individuals. Whether it's the volume and speed of speech, the amplitude of white noise, or its fluctuations and pauses, as well as the interweaving between silence and fluctuation, they all mark the starting point of our dialogue with space and the inception of relationship-building. The language itself and the content of the dialogue are integrated into the spatial language, shaped by the rhythmic composition of sound.
