Unveiling Digital Aura: Ontological Differences from the Analog Realm
Ding Yuxin
This project investigates and reconceptualizes the aura of simple digital things, such as images, audio, video, text files, etc. With both first- and second-hand research, such as literature reviews on related precedents and comparative analysis of people’s lives in reality and digital with the methodology of cultural probe, this project will take a human-centered perspective as the starting point to explore the concept of aura. The process is to speculate on the potential aspects of the human-digital relationship that contribute to the aura of digital things. Furthermore, by taking typeface design as a research lens and six historically significant typefaces as case studies, the goal is to study the aura shift of typography throughout its history on the ever-changing technological landscape, which will guide a deductive process of hypothesizing about possibilities of digital thing’s aura.
