Just Sign Here: Redesigning Logistical Information Systems and Interactions
Maiu Romano-Verthelyi
This thesis takes a broad look at paperwork as a point of interaction between administrator and user, and the complex system in which it is made and exists within. The current standard for paperwork design acts as a barrier to usability, comprehension, and decision making, but introducing Universal Design systems and methodology early on into the making of these interactions can improve equity and the user experience. But can paperwork be more than what we know it to be? We use it to record information. Maybe we can push LISI design to take advantage of formal record keeping as a memory keeping tool.

Thesis Book
The making of this book introduces Logistical Information Systems and Interactions (LISI) as a term of study. LISI refers to the experience by which individuals engage with and navigate through various forms of administrative or bureaucratic information, often encountered in artifacts such as paperwork or documentation. It pertains to the entire process through which information is discussed, exchanged, comprehended, or manipulated. This thesis investigates the idea that the design structure of information, as well as risk factors associated with information or interactions, changes the user’s ability to comprehend and consequently perform rational decision-making.

Case Study
This case study applies Universal Design solutions to an existing medical consent form requesting the extraction of additional bone marrow during a unilateral bone marrow biopsy. The new design prioritizes the patient’s comprehension, emotional respect, and accurate decision-making. None of the language is changed, but the design makes a world of difference.

Case Study
Following the tenets of Pluriversal Design, this case study takes the same medical consent form, but redesigns it into a retroactive typographical exploration of what the document would have looked like had it been designed to reflect the emotional impact of childhood illness. It reworks paperwork as a record of an intangible experience. Once again, none of the language has been altered.
