Layered of Time, Embedded Space
Xile Peng
This project merges time and space through a book crafted with transparent pages and light projections. By layering sequential photos of a Japanese carp flag fluttering in the wind, the book captures multiple moments in a single, evolving narrative. When illuminated, the projections of these layered images blend together, creating a dynamic fusion of past and present, while the text, presented in concrete poetry, enhances the conceptual depth of time and space interwoven.

A view through my window
The photos for this project were taken from my room’s window, capturing the view of a Japanese carp flag fluttering in the wind.

Content
Each image is printed on transparent paper and layered throughout the book. The use of concrete poetry for the text adds to the book's conceptual depth, with the words merging visually with the images.

Open to 360 Degree

In Dark Space1
When the book is opened to 360 degrees in a dark space, and illuminated with a flashlight, the projections of the photos cast layers of images onto the surrounding walls. This creates an immersive effect, where the flag’s multiple moments are presented as overlapping projections.

In Dark Space 2

Day&Night
When looking at the closed book with light shining through, the photos appear dark, except for the illuminated tail of the flag, symbolizing the transition between night and day, further reinforcing the theme of time’s passage within space.
