Aisle of Lies
Alia Alrubaian
Aisle of Lies investigates how design, particularly food packaging, labeling, and visual language, shapes consumer perception and decision-making within the modern food system. Sparked by a personal encounter with unexpected ingredients in a seemingly simple product, the work examines the gap between what food packaging communicates and what it conceals. Through research into additives, farming systems, and marketing strategies such as greenwashing, my thesis highlights how transparency is often secondary to profit and mass production, making it difficult for consumers to make informed choices about health, sustainability, and ethics. This thesis tries to expose commonly hidden or misunderstood aspects of the food industry. It provides accessible guidance on identifying harmful or questionable ingredients, understanding labels, and navigating grocery stores more critically. By translating complex information into clear, engaging content, this work aims to empower consumers to make more informed, intentional decisions and to foster a more critical and conscious relationship between people and the food they consume.
