Emotionally sustainable design aims to develop an emotional attachment to our possessions in an effort to reduce waste and promote a more sustainable lifestyle. Emotional attachments to our material possessions are created through empathy. However, objects are static and fail to evolve to meet our ever-changing needs and values. This in combination with consumerism makes building empathetic connections to our possessions very difficult.
The design of this cooking knife’s package possesses fundamental characteristics that will unconsciously incite the end-user to sustain an emotional attachment towards it. Its’ form evolves over time with user interaction enabling a user-object bond. The focus on the evolving packaging form is meant to encourage an emotional attachment.
