Eliminate plastic for pharmaceutical packaging
Hao-Chun Yang
My capstone project will explore biomaterials as a sustainable approach to eliminate plastic for pharmaceutical packaging. Therefore, I created a brand called Vito. Vito produces refillable eco-friendly packaging that not only cares about your health but also for the planet. The packaging is made out of bio-based materials and provides a second life, because Vito is intensely focused on bringing sustainability to your everyday life.

Capstone summary video
The video contains my thesis sentence, research, design process, and final products.

Material Exploration
To eliminate plastic for pharmaceutical bottles, I explored gelatin, eggshells, agar, natural dyes, and any combination of two.

Final package - front view
The information on the pill bottle is sat in an angled view for better readability.

Final package - back view
Customers could see the information easily when placed on shelves or platforms.

Pill dispenser
Pills come out easily with the dispensing right to the edge.

Bottle second use
The bottle provides a second life for customers to collect as an organizer or for any preferred use.

Organizer stickers
After collecting seven Vito's pill bottles, customers would receive organizer stickers to stick to their packages.

Secondary package
Considering stackability, I designed the secondary package with a window for customers to feel the materials.

Package family
I hope my capstone project inspires designers to think about shape and function and consider sustainable aspects in all the designs.
