Gamified Eco-Labeling: Incentivizing Sustainable Shopping
Poyu Chen
Emerald Land is a screen-based interactive game system that rewards eco-conscious shoppers with game points collected from sustainable shopping, all while enhancing their sustainable shopping habits through gamification. By incorporating game elements into the shopping experience, we can boost people's motivation and make the often confusing world of eco-labeling more accessible and intuitive. To bring this project to life, we installed screens on the center of shopping cart handles, equipped with RFID and Computer Vision technology to detect items in the cart and the location of the Emerald shopper in the store.

Overview of game interfaces

Key feature: Choose your elf!
In this game, you get to be the proud owner of a magical land and take on the role of a land elf. As you make sustainable grocery purchases, the elves will start planting various items on your land that meet your chosen eco-labels and sustainable criteria.

Key feature: View eco value
The built-in sensors can detect the most sustainable products near you. The system will collect sustainable game points based on your purchase and the eco-label and sustainable criteria those products meet.

Key feature: Greenswap
The system can also find similar products with lower environmental impact, and encourage users to swap to a greener product.

Key feature: Build your land!
With each eco-friendly decision you make, your land will flourish with a diverse array of plant and animal life. For instance, if you excel in choosing products that care for animal welfare, your dedication to animal welfare attracts new farm animals to your land.

Key feature: Compete with other shoppers!
At checkout, the system will display an eco-ranking pop-up, which shows your sustainable shopping ranking compared to other shoppers of the day.

Key feature: Reward shoppers
As users continue playing the game, upon reaching a certain level of points, users receive bar code coupons via registered email that can be redeemed for their next eco-friendly purchase.
