Little Worlds is an interactive, textile board game that is specifically designed for children with visual impairments or blindness. The game revolves around the theme of saving our planet by rebuilding endangered ecosystems like the Aral Sea and Mumbai’s Mangroves. The premise of the project was to create something accessible and universal that does not use visual cues to impart information.
Through out the game, vision is of least importance. All the way to the creation of an audio rule book that is compatible with NFC tap features on E-readers and mobile devices. In the game, players use tracks to move their tokens back and forth on the board while they argue and bargain to try and win the game. Players want to rebuild their Ecosystem as quick as they can before someone comes their way to destory it.
Materiality was an integral part of the development of the game, since textural differences make up a good percentage of tactility. Using wood for the board was a bold move, but one that continues to make sense. While the board is rather heavy, it is sturdy enough to last through generations without too much wear and tear.
The primary objective of the project was to create something for children that are underrepresented in the ‘fun circle’ instead of just making changes to something that already existed. I hope that this game cultivates a feeling of togetherness and lightherted fun for all.
