Spidra
Sveva Michahelles
Spidra is a ceiling lamp made up of 70% of waste materials and objects. The chosen objects are common waste elements that are difficult to recycle, such as an umbrella, a baking tray, and an advertising banner. Each element was decontextualized, stripped of its original purpose, elevated into a new dimension, manipulated, and given a new function as part of the Spidra lamp. One of the recycled elements was the ribs of an umbrella. I disassembled and reassembled them with a unique design, creating a new mechanical movement different from the original. This specific mechanism changes the shape of the lamp based on whether it is on or off, thanks to the flexibility of the lampshade. The lampshade is crafted from recycled and cut-up advertising banners, giving each piece a unique color and pattern depending on the source material. In this instance, I used Pratt's old black and white banner. Finally, a circular copper-colored baking tray, perforated to fit into its new environment, was another recycled element used in the lamp’s construction. This lamp’s ability to move and transform makes it truly special, highlighting how discarded objects can be given a new life and purpose when repurposed creatively. They are alive!
