In an era where our digital devices have become an extension of ourselves, the creation and collection of images have
reached an all-time high. With the tap of an iPhone, we can digitally document every aspect of our lives from special
occasions to everyday selfies. Yet for most of us, these photos collect virtual dust in storage. This capstone project
explores alternative ways to display, interact with, and preserve our vast smartphone photo collections, starting with
my own. The outcome is a toolkit to help users reframe their digital photo libraries not as simple repositories, but as
rich sources of meaning, inspiration, and self-discovery.

Sorting Process
The first step of the project involved reviewing AI suggestions and coming up with subject themes for 18,000+ images. As
part of this, a visual system for album covers made sorting easier.

Categories
In the end, ten subject categories emerged. These categories formed the basis for the remainder of the exploration.

Category Collages
A series of collages, each representing a distinct subject category. This process uncovered patterns of repetition,
emotion, and growth, offering a new way to see and understand the personal significance of everyday photos.

Metadata Collage
A layered collage combining category and time. By using the metadata of time, place, and person, we can deepen our
understanding of visual patterns and memories within a personal archive.

Category Quilt
A collaborative visual quilt made from two photo libraries, organized into four shared categories. This piece explores
how collective archives can reveal common themes and unique visual languages through personal imagery. Photos by Elza
Lambergs and Sahil Kathawala.

Workbook
A conceptual toolkit designed to help users reconnect with their digital photo archives. The workbook includes
open-ended prompts and exercises organized by category, time, place, and people—encouraging emotional reflection and
creative reuse.

Workbook Exercise
A sample exercise from the toolkit, inviting users to respond to their images through guided reflection. These
activities are designed to unlock emotional resonance and creative possibilities hidden within everyday photos.

Stencil
A custom stencil included with the workbook to support visual tagging and analog mapping.
