Breaking Language’s Limits — Personal Data Visualization for Emotional Expression
Yari Pang
My capstone explores how language can serve as a tool for emotional expression and personal reflection beyond its conventional boundaries. By recording my daily moods and translating them into visual data, I created a structured system that maps emotional states through a grid based on energy and pleasantness levels. This system generated unique visual patterns that I compiled into a “word book,” offering a tactile and introspective way to engage with emotions. I also transformed selected patterns into layered acrylic prints, bridging data, design, and physical form. The project invites others to rethink self-expression through a blend of language, visualization, and material storytelling.

Grid System
This page shows the base grid system for all shape creations. Referencing the mood meter, I created a grid system in which each word represents a different emotion, mapped by energy level on the y-axis and pleasantness on the x-axis.

55 Days of Shape and Data
Through repeating the same process, I created my 57 days of data.
