My capstone explores how Norway’s deep-rooted ecological values and cultural connection to nature can inform the development of more sustainable and emotionally resonant packaging systems in the United States. By examining Norwegian approaches to material innovation, design ethics, and cultural philosophies, the research aims to bridge cultural and systemic perspectives with human-centered design principles. The goal is to propose a framework and visual design outcomes that not only reduce environmental impact but also help reestablish a sense of belonging between people, packaging, and the natural world. NÆR is a curated wellness platform, designed to help people live more consciously through a closer connection to nature, materials, and everyday rituals. Rooted in Norwegian philosophy, the website brings together sustainable clothing, food, design, and experiences that encourage slower, more intentional consumption. Its purpose is to show that when people feel more connected to what they use, wear, and consume, sustainability becomes a natural part of daily life. NÆR extends beyond the digital platform by bringing its philosophies into real life, through curated gatherings and experiences. Through events like NÆR X Maaemo collaboration, the brand invites people to slow down, connect with nature and experience sustainability through food, place and community. These moments translate NÆR’s idea of closeness, seasonality, and care into lived experiences.
