LUMIMIAO
Yuxin Zhong
The Miao people, lacking a written language, preserved history and memory through embroidery — a "book without words" now often silenced in global markets. This study proposes LUMIMIAO: Light as Memory, a lamp series whose cylindrical bodies cast Miao motifs as enlarged shadows onto a curved screen, turning static patterns into living narratives of light, shadow, and story. A companion app lets users scan a lamp's shadow to unlock its meaning, build a personal archive, and extend their collection through editions co-designed with named Miao artisans — ensuring that "unwritten scriptures" speak in the digital age.
